Trying to Hide from God

Ever Try to Hide from Your Parents?

When you were a kid, did you ever try to hide from your parents?

Or hide something from your parents?

There’s something within all of us that tries to protect us by hiding. Some kind of default self preservation mode that kicks in whenever we feel fear that believes if we can just cover up what we did, or point the finger at someone else, or hide out until it all blows over, then we’ll be ok.

Hiding from God

In the garden of Eden Adam and Eve gave into temptation and took fruit from the forbidden tree. That decision to stop trusting God, stop believing God, cost Adam and Eve everything.

And do you know what they did? What their first impulse was in the garden that day?

They tried to hide from God.

Have you ever tried to hide from God?

Or hide something from God?

Fast forward from the Garden of Eden to the city of Jerusalem and we find our friend King David on his rooftop also acting on his impulse to give into temptation and take fruit from a forbidden tree. Except this time it’s not actual fruit from an actual tree, it’s a woman. And it’s not just any woman, it’s a married woman.

In one of the most famous acts of infidelity in all of human history David does the unthinkable and takes what he desires.

But that’s not all, when he finds out Bathsheba is pregnant he orchestrates the murder of her husband.

Why?

Because, he’s trying to cover up his sin.

Yet nothing is hidden from God.

Defeated

The same David who defeated a giant in the valley of Elah is now defeated by another kind of giant. This same giant that defeated David still defeats men and women today.

It’s the giant of infidelity, the giant of lust, the giant of sinful desire, and the giant of the cover up.

David tried to hide what he did from God just like we try to hide what we do from God.

But what if there was someone who had the power, the ability, a sling and a stone to defeat this giant in our hearts and lives so that we could live faithful lives? So we could be set free from sin? So that we didn’t have to hide or try to cover anything up ever again?

The Good News

The good news is that this is precisely why Jesus came from Heaven to Earth. Because of his life, his death, his burial, his resurrection, and his ascension every giant we face can and will fall in the light of His glory and grace.

And we don’t have to hide anymore.

It’s by his wounds we are healed. It’s by his grace we have been saved. And now we are welcomed into full relationship and unhindered fellowship with God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

hide

Perfection has never been the prerequisite for pleasing God. It’s always been about being in relationship and living in the light of His presence.

If you’re hiding, or if you’re hiding something, you don’t need to hide any more. God loves you. And there’s nothing you could ever do that would make God love you less.

When David realized this, he came of hiding and moved into confession and he wrote these words…

Psalm 51
1 Have mercy on me, O God,
because of your unfailing love.
Because of your great compassion,
blot out the stain of my sins.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God.
Renew a loyal spirit within me.
11 Do not banish me from your presence,
and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
